Event overview
Dr Noémi Lévy-Aksu will discuss the digital memory field in Turkey and its challenges and limitations.
In the 2000s, the memory field in Turkey opened up to the contestation of the hegemonic nationalist narrative by initiatives and groups, shedding new light on state violence, cultural diversity and identity politics. Following the collapse of the peace process in 2015 and the failed coup attempt in 2016, the crackdown on freedoms, criminalisation of critical minds and state appointment of trustees to Kurdish municipalities have dramatically narrowed the space for these counter-memory initiatives.
In this context, digital memory spaces are often the preferred solution to document and discuss human rights violations or contentious issues and attempt to reach a broader public. Offering an insight into the recent transformations of the memory field in Turkey, my presentation will discuss the opportunities offered by the digital turn, but also its challenges and limitations.
