Undergraduate dance students from dance institutions in London join for a cross-cultural dance performance led by professional dancers from Goldsmiths Confucius Institute
Undergraduate dance students will participate in a one-day cross-cultural workshop relating to Chinese traditional and contemporary dance methods. Join us as we watch their final improvised piece live on stage in Goldsmiths George Wood Theatre.
Collaborating with a doctoral research project on Chinese dance from the University of Leeds, this improvised performance focuses on the communication and transition of Chinese dance within a cross-cultural context. It delves into theinterplay between the traditional aesthetics of Chinese dance and contemporary dance concepts. The primary objective is to enable participants to engage with Chinese dance using their own bodies as instruments.
The performers will experiment with the intriguing fusion of these new components with their original cultural and training backgrounds. The rhythms and imagery of Chinese poetrywill serve as inspiration for both individual and group movement assignments. The diverse training and assignments throughout the sessions will empower students to explore dynamics andenergy from new dimensions, resulting in improvised outcomes.
The sessions will close with a short, filmed group-work improvisation session, where students will be able toconsolidate what they have learnt and perform to a small audience.
