Learn about Chinese and Vietnamese traditional and contemporary music traditions in this inspiring evening of talks and film screenings.

Goldsmiths Confucius Institute in collaboration with the Asia Centre is delighted to announce the last event of the season

This event will include a screening of two short films with talks by Dr. Yu Zhou from the University of Glasgow, as well as a Q&A with film-maker, François Bibonne.

The films will investigate Chinese and Vietnamese musical traditions and practices and explore interlocking and intertwining aspects of different forms of East Asian music and dance.

Silent Sound Documentary (2023)

This documentary records aspects of traditional Chinese instrumentalists in the UK and elements of Goldsmiths Confucius Institute Silent Sound Exhibition, which explores how Chinese philosophy intersperses itself into music, sound, art, performance, theatre and even silence.

Once Upon a Bridge in Vietnam (2023)

This documentary follows a young Frenchman in search of his Vietnamese origins through music.

Following the death of his Vietnamese grandmother, a young French music reporter decides to discover Vietnam through investigations into classical music. During his quest for cultural identity, Vietnamese journalists develop an interest in his soul searching and begin to follow the progress of the film. The National Orchestra of Vietnam, a blind choir sensitive to French melodies and a workshop for making wind instruments in a Catholic province...

François' investigations unfold over time and culminate in a decisive meeting with Thuy, a traditional musician who sparks his curiosity with Vietnamese culture. His adventure gradually turns into a quest for identity as he distances himself from Western culture and is brought closer to his Vietnamese roots - music becomes a bridge between François and his deceased grandmother.

This event is free and open to all, please cancel your ticket if you are no longer able to attend. Please do come along even if you do not have a ticket as additional tickets will be available at the door.
