Join us at The Garden Museum for an evening of music and performance in response to the work of pioneering Artist, Gardener, Radical: Frank Walter

Explore the work of one the most significant Caribbean visual artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries alongside interactive activities responding to his work devised by academics and artists at Goldsmiths. Student tickets are available for £5.

The exhibition Artist, Gardener, Radical encompasses Walter’s prolific body of work exploring Antiguan plants and landscapes, environmentalism, Caribbean and Black identity, social justice, and the complexity of nature.

Goldsmiths’ academics have created new interactive responses to the exhibition including art, creative writing, and crafting. Plus, an exclusive performance by students from local Deptford partner, IRIE! dance theatre.

Remaking with discarded textiles | Rose Sinclair MBE | Learning space | 6.30-8.30pm

Connect with Frank Walter’s work through the art of sustainability and engage with the crafting culture of the Caribbean. Create a unique table mat or art piece from repurposed household textiles guided by textiles researcher, curator, and academic Rose Sinclair MBE.

Slipstreaming with Frank Walters | Prof. Joan Anim-Addo and Dr Marl’ene Edwin | The Nave | 6.30-8.30pm

Join Goldsmiths staff and students from the Centre for Caribbean and Diaspora Studies for a collaborative writing workshop. Drawing on the themes of ancestry and Walter’s own radical practice, you are invited to produce a brief written response to the exhibition. The creative responses will be combined on a paper tapestry and displayed in the to mark the end of the exhibition.

Frank’s Leaf Couriers | Louise Ashcroft | Learning studio and Garden | 6.30-8.30pm

In response Walter’s art and political work, you are invited to enjoy a Caribbean tea and speculate what can be done to address the history of slavery written into our street names. Decorate your own leaf-shaped cardboard delivery box with artwork inspired by the exhibition. ‘Redirect’ a leaf collected from a street name with links to slavery to your own fictional address.

Performance | IRIE! Dance theatre | The Nave | 7.30pm

IRIE! dance theatre is the UK’s leading company working in the field of African and Caribbean dance fusion. The company was founded in 1985, and to date continues to practice, perform and engage communities of all ages and abilities through dance and culture. This evening, the company presents members of its youth performance group and BA students working together to celebrate the life and works of Frank Walter with dance and live drumming invoking a sense of carnival, connection, and community.
