Are you interested in social justice and education? Are you a teacher, a student, or someone concerned about learning and education?

This roundtable will be hosted by the Heads of the MA Programmes in the Department of Educational Studies, who will talk about the role social justice plays in their own MA programmes. There will be a particular focus upon the newly renamed MA Social Justice and Education, which is a relaunch of the MA Education, Language, Culture and Identity. This will be a stirring debate, addressing such questions as: is our education working? Why do poorer people and children achieve less well in many educational systems? What can education do to change society for the better?

We have a glittering array of speakers:

• Dr Veronica Poku, Head of MA Education, Language, Culture and Identity, talking about social justice and how it’s explored on her programme and in her own seminal work

• Professor Vicky Macleroy, Head of MA Children’s Literature, exploring how children’s literature has a strong focus upon social justice

• Dr Amina Shareef, exploring the social justice elements of her own research and the BA Education

• Dr Francis Gilbert, Head of MA Creative Writing and Education, exploring how creative writing can be a powerful tool for social justice. I’ll be joined by a current student, Denise Dixon Roberts, who will discuss how we might creatively rebel to make society a better place, and alumni of the course, Seb Duncan, author of forthcoming Book of Thunder and Lightning, a mind-bending time travelling novel, with social justice being a key theme.
