Was Baildon Street the 'blackest' street in Deptford?

In 1899, George Arkell, working for Charles Booth, visited Baildon Street in Deptford and utterly condemned it as one of the very worst streets in the area. Arkell claimed it was rife with crime, prostitution, poverty and child neglect. Were his conclusions correct and, if not, why was he so condemnatory? What was life really like in Baildon Street at that time? Join Goldsmiths Historian Dr John Price to find out!

This talk is being hosted by the Lamorbey & Sidcup Local History Society.

Society talks are held at St Lawrence's Community Hall, Hamilton Road, Sidcup, DA15 7HB and begin promptly at 7.30pm. The Society charges an admission fee of £5 for non members.
