Event overview
Dr Violeta Simjanovska, Director of the Arts Management programme at Sibelius Academy will share insights into the current situation in the music industry in Finland
In this lecture, Violeta Simjanovska addresses the concerns, challenges, opportunities, and limitations around the “new reality” in the music industry sector, particularly after COVID-19, and its relationship with the cultural policy discourse in Finland. She will explore the possible new scenarios that are in front of this field, and will question the framework of Finish cultural policy.
Music industries, seen as part of the Finish cultural ecosystem, are expected to contribute to economic growth from one side, and from the other, to provide a set of creative and participatory practices for musicians and audiences. In the last few years, and particularly after COVID-19, much has changed in this field. This presentation aims to explore the relationships between the music industries and cultural policy and will explore how the national cultural policy framework positions the Finish music industry amid global technological and regulatory shifts.
The development of information technology and the rapid appearance of algorithmic platforms, social networks and digital tools, have become an integrated part of the daily lives of musicians, music professionals and consumers. At the same time, new forms of music production and consumption based on digital technologies have emerged. We are witnessing the fourth revolution which is intensely changing our cultural perspectives, practices and experiences not only in terms of new information technology access, communication and music creation but also in terms of cultural policymaking.
What kind of new dilemmas do cultural policy thinkers and decision makers cope with to interfere with this “new” music industry reality and find a proper solution for the new challenges? How can these new perspectives be translated into explicit cultural policies? The lecture elaborates and illustrates the current issues within the cultural policy discourse in Finland and the consequences of the “new” reality in the music industry field and gives some framework that could be further discussed.
