‘Encrypted meaning in Anton Webern’s Serial Music’
During my MMus studies at Goldsmiths’ in 1995, I discovered an ‘anomaly’ in the row of the Quartet Opus 22 that did not seem to have been noticed before let alone explained. In the intervening years I have carried forward private research to see how widely the ramifications of that anomaly might permeate Webern’s other serial music. Confident that there is indeed much to be discovered and more to be explained, my MPhil/PhD researches have delved into other opuses, most recently on a research visit to the Paul Sacher Stiftung in Basel where much of the primary materials (i.e. most of Webern’s sketch books) are held.
My presentation will describe my discoveries in Opus 22 and elsewhere, consider some possible explanations for these discoveries, and suggest further ways forward for this line of research.
