An exhibition exploring the evolution of cameras and photography across the twentieth-century - part of the Museum of Everyday Life

The exhibition is formed of two parts which form a dialogue between two historical periods and phases of development.

‘The Arrival of Amateur Photography’, conceived and curated by Charlie Merchant-Walsh, BA History (year 3), displays a selection of cameras and photography equipment, demonstrating some of the ways that people would shoot, develop, and display photographs in the first half of the twentieth century.

‘Shrinking Digital Lifestyle’, conceived and curated by Pheroza Mottram, BA History (year 2), presents the evolution of camera design in relation to meeting consumer needs and the digitalisation of imaging in amateur photography.

Overall, the exhibition aims to start conversations about the changing role of camera technology in recording our histories, and the dying art of producing tangible photography when recording important events and mundane moments.

The exhibition is part of the Museum of Everyday Life curated by Dr John Price in the Department of History.

The exhibition runs from 25 March to 23 June 2024 and is freely accessible to the public between 9.00am and 9.00pm every day (apart from public holidays).
