Event overview
MA Musical Theatre Student Production
The hit musical Pippin with its feast of dance and seventies music, will be presented in the George Wood Theatre in January 2007. Bob Fosse’s production created a sensation in 1972 for its clever staging and witty songs, winning a number of Tony awards and running on Broadway for five years.
Our new production interprets the musical as a satire, revealing a young man’s search to give meaning to his life as an ironic reflection on realpolitik - on the horrors of war, the greed of politicians and the temptations of the flesh. The staging integrates dance into the physical language of acting to create a spectacle of movement and mime.
The show is a play-within-a-play, with a commedia dell’ arte atmosphere: its ‘Leading Player’ directs the action for Pippin’s benefit as an onstage director. The story is loosely based on the historical quest of Pippin son of Charlemagne, told in a comic, sexy and light-hearted style relevant to a young audience of today.
