Dr. Matt McManus, Lecturer in Political Science at the University of Michigan

Abstract: This talk discusses some of the core forms of reactionary and conservative rhetoric invoked to justify inequalities in wealth and power. Drawing on the pioneering work of Albert Hirschman, the talk will explain how the right will defend social hierarchy through techniques of sublimation and naturalization. Recognizing these rhetorical techniques will enable us to understand how figures like Liz Truss and Donald Trump defend their anti-egalitarian visions of society.

Dr. Matt McManus is a Lecturer in Political Science at the University of Michigan. He is the author of The Rise of Postmodern Conservatism (Palgrave) and The Political Right and Equality (Routledge) amongst other books. His forthcoming book is The Political Theory of Liberal Socialism (Routledge)
