Documentary Filmmaking
Building on the short documentaries made in the second year of this specialism, in their final year students continue their investigations into issues of representation. truth and reality, modes and approaches to documentary and non-fiction storytelling and structure. Working in groups, students specialise in one or two industry production roles to produce a documentary of 12-15 minutes from a successfully pitched idea. Peer to peer and tutor feedback forms an integral part of the learning experience designed to really advance the quality of work. Students regularly produce radical, original and critically acclaimed award_winning documentaries which are shown in festivals around the globe. The beauty and quality of the productions on this Documentary specialism pathway, continue to astound us every year, and this year’s productions are a fantastic example of this tradition of technically accomplished- aesthetically beautiful and critically informed non-fiction filmmaking.
Screen Fiction
Drawing from both classical and alternative storytelling approaches, the BA3 Screen Fiction option offers students an opportunity to engage with the constantly evolving dynamics of fiction filmmaking in the digital era.
At the start of the year the students are invited to pitch ideas for graduation films. Three are selected by the class. Production teams are formed around each film, with the students selecting specialist roles such as: Producer, Director, Sound Recordist, Cinematographer or Editor.
The Autumn Term is spent developing the films and in workshops preparing the students for their key roles. The second half of the Spring Term is exclusively dedicated to filming and editing the three films.
Peer-to-peer learning, including participating in constructive analysis in teams, is fundamental preparation for future industry employment. The breadth of subject matter and the dramatic treatment of these ideas continues to produce surprising and engaging work.
