Featuring the sketchbooks of Constance Howard, Li Cassidy-Peet, and Lucy Brown, WIP presents a look into the practices and processes of these Goldsmiths affiliates.

A sketchbook is a highly personal thing; through a sketchbook we see the turning of gears in someone’s head, the creation of a concept and eventual birth of a work of art. Featuring the sketchbooks of Constance Howard, Li Cassidy-Peet, and Lucy Brown, WIP presents a look into the practices and processes of these Goldsmiths affiliates.

Each sketchbook shows the distinctive approaches to creating that these three women have. It represents not just one’s practice, but who they are and how they think.

Within the sketchbooks we can observe the things in daily life that they picked up on, inspirations they drew, collected, and piece together. From telephone poles to adverts to scraps of clothing, these artists create a beautiful mess of ideas, meditate and scribble out concepts, and eventually find something to stick with and play out.

This exhibition creates a dialogue between alumni, professor, and visitor (a freshman who has just joined Goldsmiths, senior forming their Degree Show, professor preparing for the new year). Some of these sketchbooks show the alumni’s processes in realising their own degree shows, whilst others demonstrate the development of their own unique artistic practices past their years as students.
