Event overview
Grab a free cup of tea or coffee and join students, staff and the general public to hear about current and recent research in a relaxed, friendly environment.
Our October line up includes:
'Anti-Racist Organisations and the Struggle Against Employment Discrimination in Britain, 1968-1975'.
Dr Hannah Elias (Goldsmiths, University of London) is a cultural historian of Britain in the twentieth century, researching Black British histories, religion, media and public history.
Dr Elias’s research interrogates the place of religion in race equality campaigns, anti-racism activism, and Black liberation movements in 1960s Britain, and their relationship with global anti-colonial struggles. Her research also explores the unique place London had in the Black Atlantic, and the place of religion in processes of transnational political formation in Britain. Dr Elias also works on efforts to reform history curricula in higher education and in schools.
'Black Women and their Crafting Practices - Dorcas Clubs/Networks'
Dr Rose Sinclair MBE (Goldsmiths, University of London) is a lecturer in design education, specialising in textiles.
Dr Sinclair's research interests straddle both textiles and design education, bringing these together in her research on the histories of Black Caribbean women and their textiles craft practices, both as amateur and professional makers, through groups such as the Dorcas Clubs. She is also interested in using archives to understand textiles legacy and futures within marginalised communities.
