Abstract

We live in an era of populist discontent with the status quo. Millions have voted for insurgent right-wing parties, from the National Front to Donald Trump, that promise to stick it cosmopolitan elites and latte-sucking neoliberals. Less discussed has been the resurgence of interest in inequality, plutocracy, and the critique of capitalism in countries ranging from Brazil to the United States and France. Our talk will discuss what the future might hold for socialism in the 21st century. Will it move in the direction of liberal socialism, Bernie/AOC democratic socialism, Marxism or something new? What will these ideologies look like and what are their histories?
