Seke Chimutengwende: ‘Mystery, Horror, and Speculation’
Abstract:
Choreographer Seke Chimutengwende will discuss the choreographic processes behind three of his works:
'Detective Work' (2021), a duet with Stephanie McMann, which explores choreography as a process of creating and solving mysteries. 'It begins in darkness' (2022) a group piece which is an environment for processing the fear, anger and confusion which arise from the histories of slavery and colonialism that haunt the present. 'The Last Quartet' (premiering 2025) which imagines a “last work” or a “last attempt” at choreography, offering a glimpse of limitless possibilities and new beginnings in this current moment where hope is scarce and futures lie everywhere in ruins.
Seke will discuss the politics of improvisation, not-knowing, and collaboration within his choreographic work and how he plays with genre and abstraction to create performances that engage both the performers and the audience in a space of questioning.
