With Chris Michael (The Guardian US), Catherine Rottenberg, Jacob Mukherjee

First in a series called Wrong Answers Only, this is an informed, participatory discussion on the significance of Trump's re-election.

“How could they vote for this guy - again?!” Well, they did. So come and talk about why and what it means!

After Donald Trump’s historic second inauguration, Wrong Answers Only (a project run by MA Political Communications students) hosts a lively discussion on how Trump got reelected, what his success means for the US and the world, and the bigger issues raised by Trump’s win (media power, populism and the state of democracy - among others).

We ask the difficult questions and get beyond the dominant narratives.
How did Trump increase his vote share among the young and some people of colour?
Why was the Democrats’ appeal for Americans to “save democracy” ineffective?
How much is Trump’s success, and Kamala Harris’ failure, caused by sexism and racism?
Did Biden’s support for Israel’s actions in Gaza play a role?
Was it Elon Musk, and his takeover of Twitter / X, that won it for Trump - or were podcasts like Joe Rogan more important?
Either way, how did Trump become Big Tech’s candidate of choice?

We’ll dig into the thorny issues of democracy, media power and polarisation around Trump’s success. Our speaker will give short contributions and there’ll be plenty of opportunity for audience participation. This interactive discussion is in the Student Union Lounge - not a lecture theatre - so come along with a drink from the bar if you like!

Speakers:

- Chris Michael, Guardian US live news editor
- Catherine Rottenberg, author of The Rise of Neoliberal Feminism
- Jacob Mukherjee, lecturer in Political Communications
