Event overview
Following the screening, Roberto Mozzachiodi, will map the history of casualisation from the docks to higher education.
Goldsmiths UCU Members, students, staff and community members, are all welcome to join us for a series of film screenings!
Ken Loach's The Flickering Flame documents the struggle of Liverpool dock workers who were sacked in a pivotal labour dispute. Together with their supporters’ group the Women of the Waterfront, they rallied support from around the world and sought solidarity at the TUC conference.
Roberto Mozzachiodi (academic, organiser and translator) will contextualise the film and present a new book project from Notes from Below, marking the 30th anniversary of the Liverpool dockers dispute. Rob will map the pre-history of casualisation and the introduction of casualisation into shipping, which effectively established the model of labour flexibilization that would then permeate all industries, including higher education.
This will be an opportunity to come together, reflect on the last five years of dispute, and mobilise towards future actions together. We hope to raise consciousness of live campaigns, foster political education around labour issues, and build cross-union solidarity, across campus, Lewisham and further.
Each screening will be supported by dialogue with speakers and groups around a key issue with space for active discussion, networking and ways to get involved.
Tea and sweet treats provided.
