Join us in welcoming Italian artist and filmmaker Camilla Salvatore for a screening of her recent work, followed by a Q&A.

Camilla Salvatore, born in 1993 in Pompeii (Naples, Italy), is a filmmaker whose work intricately weaves personal narratives with broader social themes. Raised in the Vesuvian area, she pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Painting and Visual Arts at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (NABA) in Milan before completing a Master’s in Artists’ Film and Moving Image at Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2020.

In 2023, she founded Tyche Films, a Naples-based production company, reflecting her commitment to fostering cinematic projects within her native region. Her work primarily comprises experimental documentaries, often created in collaboration with her friends and community, that explore the lives of individuals navigating complex social landscapes.

We will be screening two of Camilla’s films.

'Permanent Exile' (2020), was her graduation work and tells the story of a young woman in the Witness Security Programme. The film depicts its protagonist through her absence, using personal remembrances and inner reflectionsto construct a fragmented portrait. This approach invites viewers into the character’s innermost thoughts and fears, offering a profound exploration of identity and self-examination.

Her most recent film, 'Il Capitone' (2024), is set in Naples and follows Vanessa, her mother Lina, and her friend Ciro. The film highlights the complex realities of transgender life and its intersection with love, family, and identity, offering an intimate portrayal that moves between reality and dreamlike dimensions. Incorporating sensual dances and songs of salvation, it celebrates collective redemption.

Organised and hosted by the MA Artists' Film & Moving Image Programme Director, Gail Pickering.

Free entry – no booking required – all welcome.
