HOUSE OF DREAD x JAH YOUTH ROOTS AMBASSADOR present
OMEGA RISING: WOMEN OF RASTAFARI in association with Sound System Outernational
A Screening + Panel Talk Honouring Elmina “Sister D” Davis

Join us for an evening of film, dialogue, and remembrance for Omega Rising: Women of Rastafari and the legacy of Elmina “Sister D” Davis — a visionary filmmaker, radical cultural worker, and the first Rastafari woman to document the voices and lived experiences of her community on screen.

This event powered by community and a vision to the power of Rastafari women’s storytelling across generations:

6:30 SCREENING
We will be showing Omega Rising: Women of Rastafari (1988), Davis’ landmark documentary exploring the resilience, spiritual depth, and lived realities of Rastafari women in Jamaica and Britain. This powerful work remains one of the most important visual archives of Rasta womanhood and its global context.

7:30 PANEL DISCUSSION
Following the film, a panel of Rastafari Sistrens will reflect on the ongoing significance of Omega Rising, sharing personal insights on womanhood, community, resistance, and the evolving role of women within the Rastafari movement.

ABOUT ELMINA “SISTER D” DAVIS (1958–1994)
Elmina Davis was a pioneering filmmaker, Rastafari woman, and grassroots activist whose work helped shape Black British cultural memory. As the only female founding member of the Ceddo Film and Video Workshop, she co-produced The People’s Account (1986), a powerful documentary on the aftermath of the Broadwater Farm Uprising. Her 1988 directorial debut, Omega Rising: Women of Rastafari, broke ground by highlighting the voices, struggles, and resilience of Rastafari women — both in the Caribbean and the UK. Her legacy continues to inspire and empower.

This event is hosted at the Cinema in Goldsmiths University of London and is part of HOUSE OF DREAD’s commitment to centring the creative, spiritual, and intellectual contributions of Black women, past and present. Please note photography and audio recording will be captured throughout.
