Event overview
Join us for a screening of La Moindre des Choses / Every Little Thing, Nicolas Philibert’s quietly profound documentary set at the La Borde psychiatric clinic in France.
Founded in 1953, La Borde remains one of the most noted sites associated with Institutional Psychotherapy—a movement that emerged in France after World War II. Along with Saint Alban in Lozère and Blida Joinville psychiatric hospitals in Algeria, La Borde has been a key site in practicing the key principal of this movement: that madness and distress cannot be fully understood—or treated—without addressing the pathologies and possibilities of the institution itself.
Filmed over the summer of 1996, Every Little Thing follows patients and staff as they prepare for their annual theatre performance. The film provides a different perspective on the day to day experience and practices that underpin the theoretical work of Institutional Psychotherapy proponents including Jean Oury, Félix Guattari and Gilles Deleuze, Franz Fanon and Françesc Tosquelles.
The film will be followed by a video message from La Borde as they prepare for this year’s theatre performance and La Borde team member Elodie Belmar will join for an in person discussion following the film.
Presented in French with English subtitles.
