Event overview
An introductory pre-launch event presenting our new module on Fashion, Sustainability and Global Culture in the Media, Communications and Cultural Studies Department
This event presents recent research and new perspectives on fashion as a global industry. The last two decades have seen increasing attention paid to fashion’s role in the climate crisis, its reliance on outsourced supplies of cheap labour and its role in perpetuating overconsumption. And yet fashion continues to provide an appealing and even desirable avenue for the expression of identity. We remain attached to our clothes and outfits, and so the question is how can widening an understanding of this global industry play a role in bringing a social justice agenda to the heart of the fashion system?
2-2.15pm Introduction by Prof. Em. Angela McRobbie: Researching the Full Fashion Cycle
2.15-3pm Dr Feyzi Ismail: Global Supply Chains and the Labour Involved
3-3.15pm Tea break
3.15-4pm Prof. Nirmal Puwar and Dr Catherine Hahn: The Leather Industry
4-4.45pm Prof. Em. Angela McRobbie: Rag Markets and Second Hand Dresses Revisited in Times of Vintage Couture
4.45-5pm Open-mic, followed by drinks in the bar
We encourage all current and potential MA students who are interested in the issues raised in the module to come along and find out more!
