Event overview
Goldsmiths Sociology presents Sarah Thornton discussing her recent book 'Tits Up', followed by a conversation between Sarah and Professor Angela McRobbie
Quick-witted and thought-provoking, Tits Up excavates the diverse truths of breasts, examining how women’s chests are a locus for debates about gender, beauty, decency, and bodily autonomy. Through the eyes and lives of women experts, Thornton investigates breasts from strip clubs to operating rooms, human milk banks, bra design studios, and religious retreats. With refreshing optimism, she unmasks the sexism behind the perceived profanity of breasts in the hope of liberating them from centuries of prejudice.
Sarah, an alumna of Goldsmiths, has made significant contributions to the fields of cultural studies, sociology and art, with explorations of rave and club cultures, art worlds and now breasts. We are very excited to host Sarah in her only UK talk discussing her acclaimed new book, "Tits Up".
"Thornton's book is premised on the broad truth that most American women are 'dissatisfied with, indifferent to, or ambivalent about their breasts.'... [Tits Up] wants to set these organs free with the goal of gaining a greater understanding of and appreciation for the women to which they are attached.” The New Yorker
Tits Up: The Top Half of Women's Liberation was chosen as a best book of 2024 by The Economist and The New Yorker.
