How can artists from culturally diverse backgrounds navigate an AI-driven creative landscape?

How can artists from culturally diverse backgrounds navigate an AI-driven creative landscape? How does the interplay of sound and image shape the politics of representation within performative media? Drawing from their latest project, Traversing the Classic of Mountains and Seas (2024, with Bing), Frankfurt Helmet explores the fusion of traditional Chinese mythology, generative visuals, and experimental soundscapes. This talk will delve into the intersections of heritage, technology, and contemporary practice—bridging analog traditions with digital innovation to interrogate identity fluidity in AI-based art.

Frankfurt Helmet is a sound art duo working on the experimental fusion of diverse sound textures. They collaborate with visual artists across disciplines, engaging in live performances that explore the boundaries of sound, sensory perception, time-space, and computational media. Both members are lecturers and the directors of the trans-media studio at Wuhan Institute of Design and Sciences,China. Their recent collaborations have garnered international recognition: Diving into Boundaries (2022, with Bing) was awarded the 2023 Paris Design Award and Loop into the Next Beat (2023, with Bing) was shortlisted for the prestigious ADC 102nd Annual Awards. Patch (2021, with Booming Rose) was a semi-finalist at the 2022 Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival, and was selected for the 2022 Ann Arbor Film Festival and Slamdance (Digital | Immersive | Gaming category). The piece also received an Honorable Mention at the 2021 Video Art & Experimental Film Festival and was long-listed for the Lumen Prize the same year. Their newest work, Multidimensional Illusion (2025, with Wang Zhi and Zhou Yan), was recently selected for the Boundless ∞ Immersive section at the 15th Beijing International Film Festival.

Bing (Bingxin Feng) who has been collaborating with Frankfurt Helmet since 2020 is a digital creator whose work explores the intersection of visual arts and multimedia interaction, focusing on the space where conceptual expression meets live experience. She holds degrees in Visual Communication Design (BA, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts), Graphic and Media Design (BA, University of the Arts London – London College of Communication), and Computational Arts (MA, Goldsmiths, University of London). Her work has been shortlisted for the 102nd Art Directors Club (ADC) Annual Awards and received the 2023 DNA Paris Design Award.
