Event overview
The detour reclaims diverse, working-class LGBTQ+ heritage in South East London. Through visual props and activities it recalls multivarious queer histories.
This detour challenges sensationalist Victorian accounts of filth, poverty and crime that came to typify descriptions of the area. It also flags up raced, classed and gendered implications of queer erasure and the significance of recovery. Walking around London Bridge in Southwark, we will imagine past lives and talk about what has changed and stayed the same.
Dr Catherine Hahn is an artist and social researcher at Goldsmiths. She draws on her personal experience and substantial research on queer South London for the tour.
The tour is aimed at LGBTQ+ students and allies.
The tour takes two hours, with additional travel time. We will meet at Goldsmiths front entrance and take the train from New Cross Gate to London Bridge together.
Please bring a topped-up travel card (or equivalent), wear comfortable clothes and bring water if wanted. If heavy rain is forecast, we will do the session at Goldsmiths – please check the portal for updates before the tour.
