Serbian film director and political activist Stevan Filipovic is presenting his latest film Next to Us (2024), part of the trilogy of films (Next to You, 2015; Next to Me, 2023).

This is the UK premiere of Next to Us, a thriller that follows a group of former schoolmates reuniting through a “Survivor”-style reality TV show. As their tangled histories and relationships unfold, the film offers a sharp commentary on the Serbian political crisis, set against the striking backdrop of brutalist spomenik monuments — haunting remnants of the socialist past.

This film foreshadowed the anti-corruption student protests in Serbia, which are going strong for over 11 months. Stevan Filipovic—also an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade, the site of the very first blockade - has played a key role in campaigning against corruption and will be available for a discussion after the screening.

It isn’t necessary to have seen the first two parts of the trilogy to enjoy the film, but for those interested, the first part of the trilogy, Next to You (2015), is available to watch for free (with subtitles) on YouTube.
