This event explores the recent history and context relating to the criminalisation of dissent in the UK. Through legislation such as the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 and the Public Order Act 2023, the UK has seen an increase in the criminalisation of protest that has included the arrest and imprisonment of environmental activists and the proscription of Palestine Action – leading to a spate of arrests of other protestors as reported in the British news media. Criminalisation does not happen in a vacuum. This panel of experts seeks to shed understanding on the current context - legally, socially, politically, culturally and historically - and to ask: what does this mean for UK democracy?

Panelists:
Ruth Potts, Head of Regenerative Economics, Schumacher College, Activist (Stansted 15)
Katy Watts, Lawyer (Liberty)
Elian Weizman (London South Bank University)
Tanzil Chowdhury (Queen Mary University)
