A talk by Mark Curtis, founder of Declassified UK and Visiting Fellow in Goldsmiths' School of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies (MCCS).

This event is hosted by the School of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies (MCCS) and the Leverhulme Media Research Centre as part of the MCCS Community Lectures series. It is open to all staff, students, and members of the public.

Drawing on both his historical research on empire and contemporary critiques of media coverage of Israel, Gaza, Iran and more, Mark will argue that mainstream media – whether liberal left outlets or overtly conservative titles – are complicit with UK foreign policy objectives. Most coverage neglects historical context, privileges the ‘national interest’ and hides the brutal realities of what are still described by the media as ‘humanitarian interventions’. As a visiting research fellow in the Department, Mark will also highlight the valuable role of independent journalists in confronting media failures and holding the powerful to account.
