Event overview
Public Programme Lecture with Yaiza Hernández Velázquez
Despite its ostensibly visual nature, it is fair to say that, for the most part, contemporary art has had little to say about tourism. Instead, tourism has been at best discussed as part of the infrastructure of the artworld, standing behind art-led “regeneration” or “place-making” projects and used to justify the explosion of museums (including franchise museums), biennials and fairs. However, as we wave goodbye to that expansionist phase of the “global contemporary”, something else might come into view when looked at through the lens of tourism, something that speaks about extraction, stalled futures and bunkerisation.
Yaiza Hernández Velázquez is a lecturer at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton. She was previously a lecturer at the department of Visual Cultures, Goldsmiths and led the MRes Art: Exhibiton Studies at Central Saint Martins, UAL. She is part of the editorial collective of the Journal of Visual Cultures for which she is currently preparing a themed issue on the visual cultures of tourism. She has published extensively and occasionally curates.
