CVA hosts a conversation with Indigenous artists Rember Yahuarcani and Harry Pinedo and anthropologists-curators Giuliana Borea and Lee Douglas.
Indigenous contemporary art from across distinct territories has long circulated in global markets. Indigenous artists have emerged as important voices in the contemporary art scene, articulating not only to their contributions to distinct creative and aesthetic practices, but also to specific claims to social and epistemological justice.
Bringing together two key artists from the Peruvian Amazon, Uitoto artist Rember Yahuarcani and Shipibo artist Harry Pinedo/Inin Metsa, with anthropologists and curators Giuliana Borea and Lee Douglas, this conversation seeks to hold space for discussing the possibilities and complexities of “booming” art markets for Indigenous artists.
Hosted by the Centre for Visual Anthropology, this event takes place in the context of the collective exhibit Listening to the Voices of the Rivers at Newcastle Contemporary Art, Rember Yahuarcani’s “Here Lives the Origin” at Josh Lilley Gallery, and Dr Borea’s Visiting Research and Knowledge Exchange Fellowship at Goldsmiths.
This event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited. Please note that artists will be discussing their work in Spanish will be translated into English.
