Exhibitions Hub will be screening Mitra Tabrizian’s 1993 film Journey of No Return, inviting School of Art students and alumni to submit their films in response to this work.

We’ve selected films from Oliver Crowther, Yeeun Kim, Kim Elizabeth Powell, Sthiti, Francesca Telling and Hazel Xu to be screened alongside this work from Cinenova's collection.

The short films have been chosen from an open call, inviting student and alumni of the School of Art to submit their work in response to Mitra Tabrizian’s 1993 film.

The programme brings about a series of conceptual and material overlaps between Tabrizian’s film and the submissions, posing ongoing questions around experiences of diaspora, language, intergenerational relationships, longing, nostalgia and place.

Screened in dialogue, questions arise about societal shifts over the last 30 years, examining where cultural narratives have developed, stalled or even crystalized. The selection also raises questions around the development of moving-image practices, with responses working with analogue processes, archival materials, digital film and AI.

There will be an opportunity for audience feedback and questions following the screening.

About Journey of No Return:

Tabrizian’s film follows a female filmmaker in London in the 90s, struggling to craft a screenplay that studios will agree to take on. Unpicking the hostile nostalgia she finds embedded within the capital, the protagonist articulates experiences of diaspora and immigration, the isolation of speaking in a foreign tongue and the unwritten biases within cultural industries. Working with postcard perfect colours and surrealist tableaux, this short film conveys the internal wrestle of creating within unfamiliar terrain—dissecting cultural promises from lived experience.

Many thanks to Cinenova.
