Event overview
Celebrate the publication of Reading Children's Fairytales, an edited collection created by the Goldsmiths community.
Join us for an evening to celebrate the publication of Reading Children’s Fairytales: Inside the Gingerbread House (Routledge, 2025). This launch event will bring together the editors and contributors featured in the edited collection to explore the many ways ‘Hansel and Gretel’ continues to shape scholarship, storytelling, and practice.
The programme will include conversations introducing the book’s key areas of focus: theoretical perspectives, multimodal approaches, and personal and creative responses. Contributors will discuss their research, ranging from examinations of picturebooks and graphic narratives to poetry, sculpture, Hip-Hop, and young adult fiction. There will also be opportunities to hear directly from the creative writers and illustrators whose original work features in the volume.
While Reading Children’s Fairytales: Inside the Gingerbread House takes ‘Hansel and Gretel’ as its focal point, it is equally a celebration of the scholarly community that made the volume possible. Developed within the creative and critical environment of Goldsmiths, University of London, the book reflects the power of collaboration at a time when the arts and humanities face increasing marginalisation. The result is a volume that not only reframes ‘Hansel and Gretel’ but also models a dynamic, co-created approach to children’s and YA literature scholarship.
Guests will be invited to join a Q&A, browse the book, and continue the discussion over festive refreshments.
