Event overview
Centre for the Arts and Learning at Goldsmiths will be exhibiting a unique Living Memorial in honour of Nigerian writer and activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa
From Thursday 1 March, the Centre for the Arts and Learning at Goldsmiths, University of London, will be exhibiting a unique Living Memorial in honour of Nigerian writer and activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa.
The memorial, commissioned by the Remember Saro-Wiwa coalition* and created by celebrated sculptor Sokari Douglas Camp, takes the form of an enormous steel Nigerian bus, and is the first mobile memorial in the UK.
Ken Saro-Wiwa devoted his life to the protection and advancement of the Ogoni, an oil-rich area of the Niger Delta. As founder of MOSOP (the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People), Saro-Wiwa and eight of his colleagues were executed by the Nigerian Government 11 years ago for protesting against the devastation of the Niger Delta by western oil corporations, to worldwide condemnation at the time.
* Remember Saro-Wiwa is a coalition of organisations and individuals initiated and co-ordinated by PLATFORM.
