Event overview
How do artists approach social change and utopias? What perspectives does performance art practice offer for addressing social issues?
In a time of multiple crises, characterized by global instability, the weakening of democracy and climate change, the need to build a different kind of world(s) is more pressing than ever. Artist-researcher, Dr. Pilvi Porkola, talks about her performance project SOFA – Conversation on Utopias (2024), in which she invited eight guests from different fields to sit on a sofa in a public space and discuss social change and utopias. The discussions offered approaches to utopian thinking and practices from the perspectives of democracy, care, activism, urban planning, art and hope. By drawing on utopian studies, utopian pedagogy and artistic work, Porkola opens perspectives on how performance can be understood as a utopian practice aimed at social change.
