School of Music, English & Theatre PGR series: "Paracosmic Multimedia: Video Game Sound, Virtual Worlds & Imaginary Play"

Traversing six popular and diverse open world video games, Raymond Sookram will explore how sound contributes to specific representations of, and information about, national identities and historical events and their consequences; and whether game sound affords context for critical reflection in moments of play. These questions are explored through his proposed framework of "paracosmic multimedia" derived and adapted from the paracosm and world play theories of childhood imaginary play. This work reinstates the importance of sound in instances of imaginary play; organises defined parameters of interactive game sound in open virtual worlds; and provides a toolkit through which individuals, including players, researchers and composers, can make sense of sonic gameplay experiences of themselves and others.

Free event, all welcome, not just researchers and PGR students!
