Join us for the launch of two public commissions that creatively and critically respond to Deptford Town Hall and its statues.

Co-hosted by Alchemy and the Deptford People’s Heritage Museum, this event will mark the first public showcase of a new interactive artwork alongside film, conversation and spoken word.

Deptford Town Hall has long been a landmark in New Cross. Its façade, with its carved imperial figures, has long stood as a visible reminder of Britain’s maritime power and colonial violence. For many, these statues still symbolise the harms that have yet to be fully reckoned with.

This event is a chance to watch new work, hear from the people involved, and take part in collective reflection and creative responses, marking a step in an ongoing process. Shaped by student protest and community collaboration, these commissions invite alternative ways of seeing, remembering, and imagining this space.

These commissions draw directly on the legacy of the 137-day occupation of the building by Goldsmiths Anti-Racist Action (GARA) in 2019. In 2024, three commissions were developed to create space for artists, researchers and young people to respond to the building through creative and critical work.
