Monologues of the Mediterranean Sea

The Centre for Research Architecture is proud to host an evening of documentary theatre featuring stories from people who have attempted to cross the world’s deadliest border and the people who refused to let them drown en route. For the last 10 years, the two communities have worked together to defy a European border regime that criminalises free movement and mutual aid, refusing to accept the framing of such deeply human instincts and practices as threats to “national security.” This piece will be followed by a Q&A with the Berlin-based playwright and director, Michael Ruf (MA Theatre alumnus, Goldsmiths), as well as activist-scholars from the civilian search-and-rescue community who articulate a different notion of “security”, one that does not always (or ever) centre the nation state. Performed for the first time in English (translated from its original German), the performance will be supplemented with projection of subtitles in Arabic French, and German.

This event is free and open to the public. Seats allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. This production is made possible by funding through CHASE Doctoral Training.
