Professor of Media & Communications, Nick Couldry will deliver his Inaugural Lecture entitled ‘‘The Media’: A Crisis of Appearances’. It will be introduced by Professor Simon McVeigh, Pro-Warden (Research and Business Enterprise), and will be followed by a reception.

In his lecture, Nick Couldry will argue that, for some time, the authority of media institutions has depended on an underlying idea that they are our principal point of access to what’s going on in the wider social world: he calls this ‘the myth of the mediated centre’. This myth is captured in condensed form in our use of the phrase ‘the media’. But what if this idea is less and less plausible at a time of fragmenting audiences, the infinite spaces of the online world, and media reception’s distribution across countless mobile and other devices?

Couldry argues that the forces holding our idea of ‘the media’ in place are more powerful than is often realised, and that the idea is unlikely to wither for some time. It is more interesting to think about what strategies are coming into play to sustain media institutions’ authority in these increasingly difficult conditions. He will explore this question in relation to debates about reality TV, ‘convergence culture’ and governments’ relationship to media.

The lecture takes place at 5:30pm followed by a reception(at about 6:30pm).

Inaugural lectures are free and un-ticketed but those wishing to attend are asked to RSVP to the Warden's Office, inaugurals@gold.ac.uk.
