For Goldsmiths Staff

Massage treatments with:
Donna Hartwell (MTI) seated back, neck and head massage
Gavin Blundell (ITEC, LCIC) seated bodywork, Indian head massage

Many top organisations offer massage at work as both a reward for hard working employees and as part of their health and wellbeing initiatives to combat stress. We at Goldsmiths are fortunate to have two fully qualified masseuses working amongst us. Of course, this is not their 'day job' but we have arranged to set aside some time on occasional Thursday afternoons where staff can book a fifteen, twenty or thirty minute session in a quiet room away from work. The service is being piloted this summer and we hope to make it a monthly offering. All treatments are subsidised by Staff Development HR but we ask a nominal fee from staff of £6 per fifteen minute, £8 per twenty minute and £12 per half hour session. We would also like to know if there is any demand for at-desk massage within departments.

DONNA HARTWELL (MTI)
I trained in Holistic Massage at the Quantum Metta (literally 'the energy of loving kindness') school in North London and am fully qualified (MTI) and insured. My treatments are gentle and soothing and are designed to leave you feeling calm and relaxed. Using a series of strokes, kneading, friction, as well as percussion and vibration techniques I can relieve muscle tightness, increase flexibility and enhance blood flow and lymphatic drainage in the areas treated.

For the Time out massage at work sessions, the areas treated will be the back, neck and head. You will remain fully clothed, sitting comfortably in a chair.

GAVIN BLUNDELL (ITEC, LCIC)
I am offering two treatments: Seated Bodywork (On-Site) and Head Massage.
I am a qualified and insured massage therapist (ITEC, LCIC) and a member of the Complementary Therapists Association.

Indian Head Massage is based on the traditional form of head massage practised in India for over 1,000 years. This therapy is sometimes referred to as 'Champissage', a Hindi word meaning 'Head Massage' from which the word 'shampoo' is derived.

This is a treatment of the upper back, shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp, ears and face. The recipient is seated and remains fully clothed. The aim of Indian head massage is to release the stress that has accumulated in the tissues, muscles and joints of the head, face, neck and shoulders; it helps increase joint mobility and flexibility in the neck and shoulders, improves blood circulation and lymphatic flow, frees knots of muscular tension, relaxes connective tissue, and aids in the elimination of accumulated toxins and waste products.
This treatment is especially good for relieving stress, tension, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, migraine and sinusitis; promotes a sense of calmness, a release of anxiety and helps in clearer thinking. The pressure applied will vary dependent on the patient's requirements or preferences as communicated with the therapist.
A full thirty minute treatment includes movements on the ears and face. A shortened 'on-site' treatment is typically fifteen or twenty minutes, concentrating on the upper back, shoulders, neck and scalp.

Seated Bodywork (also called "On-Site" massage) is a derived from the ancient Oriental massage arts of Anma and Shiatsu. It focuses on key tension areas in the shoulders, neck, back, head, arms and hands. The recipient is comfortably seated in an ergonomically designed massage chair and remains fully clothed. The therapist moves around the seated client and uses a range of different movements (using thumb, finger, elbow and knuckle pressure) over the whole back, neck, shoulder and scalp areas. The movements used encourage blood flow to all areas of the body improving circulation. This leads to more efficient elimination of toxins and waste products in the blood, thereby helping to maintain a healthy immune system.

Seated bodywork is excellent for relieving stress and tension and encouraging knotted, tight muscles to loosen up. It helps with backache, repetitive strain injury, asthma, headaches, migraines, toothache, fatigue, sinus problems, eyestrain, anxiety, irritability and insomnia. The pressure applied will vary dependent on the requirements or preferences as communicated with the therapist. Treatment times can be varied, usually fifteen, twenty or thirty minutes as specified.
