Proboscis has been invited to present a selection of works as part of the Digital Cities exhibition which examines how digital technology helps us understand and improve the planning and experience of our city.

The exhibition looks at the impact of movement in cities: how communication and information technologies enhance a person’s experience of a place; how people interpret cities with the use of technology; how mapping influences the design and planning of cities; and also discusses some of the ‘big brother’ issues such as privacy and security. The exhibition’s aim is to allow both industry professionals and the public to understand the inner workings of the city and how this will affect their everyday lives in days to come.

For Digital Cities, Proboscis is presenting a multi-media installation of works from recent projects including Snout, Urban Tapestries and Social Tapestries, all of which explore human relationships to the urban environment. This will offer audiences a glimpse into the significant body of work we’ve produced since 1999 which explores how networks and modes of communication – virtual and physical – foster and build communities of people and interests.

Proboscis has recently won two major public commissions that investigate public space including ‘Perception Peterborough’ and ‘The Art of Common Space’, a programme of experimental commissions and events, curated by Landscape+Arts Network Services, which will take place in Gunpowder Park in March 2009.

Digital Cities is part of the joint Building Centre / New London Architecture education programme and has been curated by The Building Centre and Sir Terry Farrell.

Giles Lane, co-director and founder of Proboscis, is currently a Visiting Tutor on the MA Design Course at Goldsmiths.
