Dave Laing, ‘Words of Love’, respondent Pete Astor, ‘Exploring the Popular Song Seminar’, Centre for Contemporary Music Cultures.
Love songs comprise about 90% of popular music but only 10% of commentary and analysis of the music. In his talk Dave Laing begins to redress that imbalance, focusing on lyrics as linguistic utterances constrained by the vocal and musical dimensions of a song.
