GLITS Creative Writing Reading

Kirsten Ellis (Goldsmiths)

Reading from her acclaimed new biography, Star of the Morning,
The Extraordinary Life of Lady Hester Stanhope.

The Egyptian ruler Mehmet Ali claimed that she caused him ?more
trouble than all the insurgent people in Syria or Palestine.?
Picasso declared her ?the very model of the free woman? and
Virginia Woolf was fascinated by the woman who became the greatest
female traveller of her day‚ roaming the Middle East dressed as a

women travellers; she played a significant role in the politics of
the Middle East during one of its most turbulent eras. Kirsten Ellis
talks about the discoveries and new research revealed in her
acclaimed new biography, Star of the M
