This two day workshop demonstrates and demystifies project management by taking you through, step by step, what you need to do at each stage to achieve success. Bring along a project you are currently working on, are stuck on, or are yet to get started!
Kate Forbes-Pitt has managed projects of various sizes in local government and Higher Education since 1991. She lectures in Information Systems in Business & Project Management at LSE. Kate brings a wealth of theoretical knowledge as well as a down-to-earth pragmatic approach to managing all types of projects whether they are large or small or cover a long or short time span.
Outline
When it comes to the everyday tasks and problems we deal with at work, the idea of using established project management methodologies such as PRINCE2 can seem like taking a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. Even if we wanted to utilise them, don’t they involve skills that are overcomplicated and costly to acquire?
Kate Forbes-Pitt specifically developed this two day course in her own HE institution to show that all we need to learn about are the basic principles of project management to transform the way we get work done and communicate with colleagues to achieve joint tasks.
The workshop demonstrates that understanding and using elements of PRINCE2 methodology can be useful in the higher education setting. The course uses examples of small HE based projects to guide participants through all sections of PRINCE2 showing its scalability. Participants leave with substantial working notes relating to their own projects.
The course aims to empower people to deal with PRINCE2 in their own work, rather than have a methodology imposed upon them or bombarding and bamboozling them with terminology. The course consciously avoids acronyms and attempts to humanise the jargon. On day 2, participants have the choice of working on a given example or bringing in their own project. Participants can reframe their own project in PRINCE2 terms with advice on hand in a space away from the pressures of their office.
