John Wakeford will deliver workshop on good practice in managing the PhD and how to ensure its timely completion.

About the workshop leader
This workshop is led by John Wakeford, founder and Director of the Missenden Seminars and national development programmes, including graduate school development, quality assurance and enhancement, and RAE strategy. He has 40 years of experience of working in universities through which he can offer an understanding of the needs of senior university staff. Since 1987 he has been researching, planning, designing, and presenting in-house programmes tailored to the needs of HE institutions and individual staff. He has special interests in postgraduate research student supervision; giving confidential advice to doctoral students and in getting research funded.

Outline
Through syndicate exercises, plenary discussion and group work on case studies, John Wakeford will deliver this workshop on good practice in managing the PhD and how to ensure its timely completion. Participants will look at the context of Graduate PhD research supervision; what is a PhD? - benchmarks and learning outcomes and the objectives and learning outcomes of the PhD programme. Problems of recruitment, admission, induction, research training and monitoring progress will be examined, with special reference to practice at Goldsmiths and University of London. Participants will finish the day with their own action plan of what to do next. Professor Carrie Paechter, Dean of the Graduate School will join the workshop for the pre-lunch session to detail and take questions on the vision and policy as it pertains to Goldsmiths.

Who should attend this workshop?
This workshop is vital for all those members of academic staff who supervise the research of PhD students.
