Event overview
An exhibition of textiles from Whistler's studio, open to all staff and students at Goldsmiths, as well as members of the general public.
The collection of textiles featured in this exhibition at the Constance Howard Centre in the Deptford Town Hall Building at Goldsmiths consists of cloth fragments from the home and studios of James McNeill Whistler and Beatrix Whistler.
They were collected by artist Clifford Cundy when he closed the studio of J.M.W. Turner's great-great granddaughter in the 1960s.
The textiles' provenance is through word-of-mouth, but experts at the V&A have examined the pieces and they all agree that they date either from the period contemporary with Whistler, or an earlier period.
There are high status fragments of textile from China, India and the Ottoman Empire. All of the textiles have a strong aesthetic appeal, many of them radiating and diffusing light through the use of pure gold and silver thread and the luminescence of pure silk.
