Event overview
The seminar will report on recent research in east London schools on young bilingual children learning to read in the language of the home using dual language books and then moving on to write their own.
Working with children aged 6 to 10 speaking Albanian, French, Gujerati, Turkish and Urdu in addition to English, Dr Raymonde Sneddon will explore the transfer of skills between languages and the children’s understanding of how language works. She will reflect on the impact that becoming biliterate can have on children’s achievement in school, on their personal identity and their cultural confidence and the importance of families, mainstream and complementary schools working together to develop children's skills in all their languages.
Dr Raymonde Sneddon was a teacher in Hackney for 17 years, specialising in working with bilingual children, their families and communities. She was a teacher educator at the University of East London for 11 years and is currently a part-time research fellow in the Cass School of Education at UEL and an honorary fellow in the Department of Applied Linguistics and Communication at Birkbeck. Raymonde’s research has focused on multilingualism, multiliteracy, community languages and complementary education. She has recently published Bilingual Books – Biliterate Children with Trentham Books.
