We are delighted to announce that Universal Music will be presenting a UTALK at Goldsmiths, University of London on 23 May, 3- 4.30pm, Richard Hoggart Building Room 309.
The music industry is facing many new challenges with the growth of global digital media. At the same time the current moment represents a golden age for the production of music and its diversity to vastly different audiences across the world. Music culture also touches the everyday lives of people in their homes, workplaces, shopping, leisure and travel. It has become much easier for people, especially young people, to create their own music and distribute it. And the music industry is also a work destination, offering job opportunities across a wide range of activities, from visual content production to digital media and web design to marketing and communications. Never before has the music industry become so close to audiences and consumers, from very young to old, and this has required the development of complex and subtle techniques for reach and consumer relations. ‘Co-production’ and ‘co-creation’ entered the music industry long before they became so widespread across other sectors and this means close connection and daily conversations with groups of young people and with fan bases.
The UTALK at Goldsmiths will include key figures from Universal Music. They are
Niamh Byrne Creative Content Strategy, Universal Music UK
Jim Chancellor MD Fiction Records
Sarah Boorman Marketing Director, Island Records
Ross Anderson Creative Director, Polydor Records
Each person will talk about what they do, and what the key issues are, for about 10-15 minutes. We will then open the floor to discussion from students.
Some other leading people from Universal Music will also attend. They are Hannah Neaves, Head of Marketing, Polydor Associated Labels, Clive Cawley, Label Manager Vertigo, Morna Cook, HR Director, Universal Music and Selina Webb, Communications Director, Universal Music.
The students attending the session will include BA 2nd and 3rd year Media and Communications. There will be a few others from across the college (Art, Music). And a small number of keen PhD students will also attend.
Tea and coffee will be served.
Drinks in the Amersham Arms afterwards.
