A one day conference

International NGOs play a significant role in humanitarian aid, developmental activities and service provision and in the shaping of public policies. However, their role as institutions of representation that construct our knowledge of, and link us to, the global poor remains under-researched. The conference brings together academics, practitioners and policymakers to discuss how we come to understand global poverty, development and human rights through the public messages of INGOs. It debates the challenges and consequences of INGOs’ representations across key issues and ideas of charity, justice, aid, consumerism, ethics and the visual, and through engagement with three interlinked elements- representation, production, and reception.

The event is sponsored by the ESRC as a part of the postdoctoral fellowship (PTA-026-27-2546) of Nandita Dogra and also marks the announcement of the forthcoming publication of her book ‘Representations of Global Poverty: Aid, Development and International NGOs’.
