Event overview
A practice-based research project which will engage with artists-educators, students and community representatives.
The project will explore a range of issues related to the New Cross Fire of January 1981 which resulted in the death of 13 local residents.
Street Art has been developed by John Johnston, Deputy Director of the Centre for the Arts and Learning in the Educational Studies Department in collaboration with the departments of Politics (Bernadette Buckley) , Art (Susan Kelly) and History (Richard Grayson).
The Centre for the Arts and Learning has invited three Belfast-based mural artists - Danny Devenny, Mark Ervine and Marty Lyons. Devenny, Ervine and Lyons are from opposite sides of the Northern Ireland political divide. They have collaborated on a number of national and international projects in the past including the 2008 Liverpool/ Irish mural as part of Liverpool City of Culture.
The week-long project will result in the production of a Mural reflecting a variety of conversations the artist will have with the local community and political activists and will culminate in a day-long Symposium at Goldsmiths.
