Mutation in economic value under cognitive capitalism: Some basic implications

Abstract : Cognitive capitalism as a new regime of capitalist accumulation shows a twofold aspect. On the one end, it follows dematerialization of production and increasing codification of intangibles, on the other end a second wave of dematerialization is taking place. Digital device threatens traditional technics of enforcement of intellectual property rights, but it also reveals the centrality and hegemony of intangibles of a second type, those which are not codified and can be captured through W 2.0. arrangements. The core of the new transformation is closely linked to intangibles of type 2. The true crisis of commoditization relies in the difficulty of their codification.

Yann Moulier-Boutang is co-director of the Quarterly French Review MULTITUDES, professor at the University of Technology of Campiegne, adjoint director of Laboratoire Costech, and part of l’École Supérieure des Arts et du Design de Saint-Étienne. Key books: Althusser une biographie(Grasset, 1992), De l’esclavage au salariat (PUF, 1998), Le capitalisme cognitif (Éditions Amsterdam, 2007), L’abeille et l’économiste (Carnets Nord, 2010).
